AFP: Gorsuch Confirmation Means Rule of Law Will Be Protected

Apr 7, 2017 by AFP

The group advocated for Gorsuch throughout his nomination and applied grassroots pressure to secure his confirmation.

Arlington, Va. — Americans for Prosperity cheered the Senate’s confirmation of Judge Neil Gorsuch as the next Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Since his nomination, the group has called on the Senate to confirm Gorsuch without delay. This week AFP announced plans to score senators on Friday’s floor vote and sent a key vote letter, explaining to senators that they would use the floor vote as part of their annual scorecard, and urging senators to vote YES to confirm.

AFP Chief Executive Officer Luke Hilgemann issued the following statement:

“It’s been clear throughout this process that Judge Gorsuch is eminently qualified for the Supreme Court bench. In 2016, our activists spoke with tens of millions of Americans across the country about the issues they care about. So many said they care about the future of the Supreme Court and getting a jurist who adhered to the Constitution rather than political whims.

“Although Senate Democrats insisted on playing politics with Gorsuch’s nomination, there’s no denying that his record of respecting the rule of law, exercising judicial restraint and upholding the Constitution make him right for the job. The American people deserve a principled and experienced justice like Judge Gorsuch, and we thank those who advanced his nomination. We also plan to utilize our grassroots force around the country to let Americans know who played politics during this process, and hold them accountable for their votes.”

Judge Gorsuch’s confirmation comes after weeks of unprecedented grassroots action supporting the nominee. AFP grassroots volunteers made hundreds of thousands of calls to the public, asking them to contact their senators and urge them to confirm Gorsuch without delay.

Nearly two months of grassroots pressure ultimately yielded success in West Virginia, North Dakota, and Indiana as Senators Manchin (D-WV), Heitkamp (D-ND), and Donnelly (D-IN) all split with their party, listening to constituents insisting that lawmakers advance Gorsuch’s nomination.
