AFP-FL Applauds Commissioner Stacy White for Standing Up for Taxpayers

Local transportation surtax challenged by Commissioner White

Brandon, FL – Americans for Prosperity-Florida (AFP-FL) applauds District 4 Hillsborough County Commissioner Stacy White today for challenging a surtax increase that voters recently had an opportunity to review.

When voters amended the County Charter, they believed they were supporting a moderate tax increase to fund transportation and infrastructure needs. However, Commissioner White has challenged the referendum’s legitimacy on grounds that an unaccountable committee put in place to administer $9 billion in investments circumvents Hillsborough county’s elected officials.

AFP-FL interim state director, Skylar Zander, released the following statement:

“It’s clear voters want to address transportation and infrastructure needs in Hillsborough County. But transparency and good stewardship are hallmarks of the role of local government. Allowing an unelected and unaccountable board to usurp the role a responsibility of elected officials runs counter to the Florida values these leaders are entrusted with. We applaud Commissioner White for having the courage to stand on principle and defend taxpayers in Hillsborough County.”
