LANSING, Mich.—Americans for Prosperity-Michigan expressed disappointment on the heels of House passage of a multi-bill Detroit bankruptcy package. Scott Hagerstrom, state director of the grassroots limited government group, issued the following statement:
“Sure, they added some window-dressing, but the view for taxpayers hasn’t changed. House lawmakers agreed to raid the state’s rainy day fund and voted to give Detroit a bailout at the expense of hard-working citizens across Michigan.
“Perhaps even more disappointing, they capitulated on the most meaningful reform contained in the package. Lawmakers caved to demands from Detroit’s political class when they eliminated a requirement that the city convert its pension system to a defined contribution retirement plan. In doing so, they just gave Detroit the green light for more bad behavior.
“Detroit has gotten enough special favors. Unfortunately, with each bailout, it becomes less likely that the city will own up to its mistakes and take responsibility.”
