AFP:  Congress Must Stop Budgeting by Crisis

Dec 17, 2019 by AFP

Arlington, Va. — Today, the House of Representatives passed a $1.4 trillion spending package to fund the federal government for the rest of the fiscal year.

Americans for Prosperity Senior Policy Fellow Alison Acosta Winters released the following statement:

“These two spending bills represent all that is wrong with Congress’s approach to the budget. The bills are being rushed through at the last minute—less than 24 hours after the legislative text was released in a pass-it-to-know-what’s-in-it approach that should set off warning bells for every American. So far, we do know the bills include unrelated issues from reauthorizing the Export-Import Bank to costly corporate welfare tax extenders to pension bailouts, all of which would have serious obstacles to passage when considered on their own. Much more will come to light if the bills are passed in the Senate.

“This costly, budget-by-crisis approach to appropriations—and legislating—must end. Congress gives its Members a false choice between voting yes on massive spending bills larded with all manner of problematic policies, many of which are unrelated to spending, and voting no, leading to a government shutdown. It’s time for lawmakers to stop using their own dysfunction as an excuse for bad policy. Americans deserve better.”
