LANSING, Mich. – Americans for Prosperity-Michigan (AFP-MI) testified in support of criminal justice reform legislation that would ensure public safety, respect human dignity, and recognize the potential in every person to improve their life.

House Bills 4980 through 4985, known as Clean Slate legislation, would automate the expungement process, allowing those who’ve paid their debt to society a true second chance at housing, jobs, and educational opportunities.

AFP-MI Community Engagement Director Diana Prichard had this to say:

“A criminal record is a significant barrier for people who are trying to productively re-build their life after paying their debt to society.

“Our lawmakers have the opportunity to empower thousands of deserving Michiganders by passing this legislation. If more individuals can get a second chance, more people will have the opportunity to find good jobs and provide for themselves and their families. This will help strengthen communities, grow our economy, and promote public safety.

“We encourage the legislature to give Michiganders a long overdue Clean Slate.”

The Clean Slate legislation passed the house in November of 2019. If passed in the Senate Judiciary and Public Safety committee it will be up for a vote by the full Senate.
