Americans for Prosperity to Wisconsin Congressional Delegation: Oppose Medicare Part D Rebate Proposals

-Don’t tax Wisconsin seniors to fuel higher levels of federal spending -

MADISON, WI—The Wisconsin chapter of Americans for Prosperity (AFP-WI), the nation’s premier free market grassroots organization, sent a letter to the Wisconsin delegation of the U.S. Congress opposing Medicaid Part D rebate proposals.  AFP-WI urges federal lawmakers from Wisconsin to oppose President Obama’s attempt to raid Medicare Part D in order to pay for higher levels of federal stimulus spending.

“The President says that he wants to reduce taxpayer subsidies to prescription drug companies, but that’s not what this plan does. Like most things from this President, his rhetoric distorts and disguises the real issue.” said AFP-WI Director David Fladeboe. “Don’t be fooled by the rhetoric: This is no rebate in any real-world sense of the word. The President’s proposal will end up being a tax on seniors in the form of higher Part D premiums.”

Created in 2006, Medicare Part D provides prescription drug coverage for Medicare beneficiaries. The program has successfully used market mechanisms, such as competition and choice, to improve access and control costs, making it an anomaly among government programs. Beginning with his State of the Union in January, President Obama is promoting a proposal that taxes the Medicare Part D programs in order to pay for higher levels of spending in other areas of government.

“Nearly 130,000 activists live in the Badger State, and they’re watching to see whether their federal lawmakers support the President’s misguided rebate proposal,” continued Fladeboe.  “They want their federal lawmakers to put the interests of Wisconsin seniors first, not the President’s stimulus spending agenda.”

Currently, there is legislation sitting in Congress that carries out the President’s proposal, the Medicare Drug Savings Act of 2013 (S. 740, H.R.1588), sponsored by Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) and Representative Henry Waxman (D-CA).
