Oppose Senate Bill 1279

January 29, 2013

We’re opposing Senate Bill 1279, a bill that would re-align Soil & Water Conservation Districts from DCR to DEQ.  Senator Emmett Hanger (R-24) is the sponsor of this bill.

Please contact your state senator IMMEDIATELY. This bill will be up on the Senate floor Wednesday, January 30th (TOMORROW).

Suggested language to use:
I oppose Senate Bill 1279.  This bill would reduce the role of directly elected local Soil & Water Conservation Districts in protecting landowners. It would also increase the regulatory authority and power of the DEQ, further centralize power in Richmond as opposed to the localities affected, and destroy the separation of powers now enjoyed by the current split between the DCR and DEQ – which has the blessing of protecting citizens from ill-formed and unintended consequences of decisions by any one agency.

In essence, because of the increased regulations and penalities coming from DEQ, this bill will make farming too expensive for local farmers.  The result is an increase in food prices, less disposable income and a crippled economy, stemming from an overreaching environmental controls.
