AFP Virginia: Statement on Passage of Budget

June 13, 2014

Richmond—AFP Virginia State Director Sean Lansing issued the following statement Friday after the Virginia General Assembly passed a clean budget bill without Medicaid expansion:

“We commend the House of Delegates for showing steadfast resolve on the issue of a clean budget during the past three months, and we applaud a bipartisan majority in the Virginia Senate for doing the right thing for 8.1 million Virginians by rejecting Governor McAuliffe’s Medicaid expansion earmark and his Washington-style shutdown politics by agreeing to a clean spending plan. It is now time for Governor McAuliffe to drop his political demands and lead.

“The governor should immediately sign this budget to prevent a government shutdown, and he should work with legislators in both parties on real health care reform that ensures our most needy citizens have access to quality, affordable care.

“Should the governor veto this budget or expand Medicaid by executive fiat with the stroke of his pen, he will do so to the detriment of the Commonwealth’s reputation and the office he holds. He will no doubt be held accountable not just by a majority of Virginian’s who oppose ObamaCare’s Medicaid expansion, but by lawmakers and citizens from both parties who understand that this is a democracy, not a dictatorship.”
