Statement Regarding Opinion Request on State Spending on Charitable Organizations

January 11, 2011

RICHMOND – Del. John O’Bannon (Henrico) has requested an opinion from Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli on the constitutionality of proposed state spending on privately controlled charitable organizations. O’Bannon made the request on behalf of constituent Norm Leahy, who blogs on Tertium Quids.

Americans for Prosperity’s Virginia State Director Ben Marchi today issued the following statement:

“At a time when earmarks are under intense scrutiny in Congress, it is clear that the same wasteful spending habit has become entrenched on Capitol Square in Richmond as well. Every dollar spent by legislators should be examined and justified, including those whose very constitutionality is in question.

“Kudos to Norm Leahy for staying on top of this, particularly at a time when Virginia faces tremendous budget pressure. We likewise appreciate Delegate O’Bannon’s assistance in seeking an opinion from the Attorney General’s office. We trust that Attorney General Cuccinelli will give the issue its appropriate consideration.”
