Political Games Could Lead to Regressive Tax Increase
RICHMOND Americans for Prosperity Virginia (AFP-VA) is taking a stand against efforts to tie up Virginias biennial budget over partisan games. Even with the largest budget in Virginia history, several Virginia lawmakers are still not satisfied and until they get their demands, they are holding the Virginia budget hostage and bringing no solutions to the table.
It is disappointing that Virginia families must do more with less money, face nearly $5.00 a gallon gasoline and our lawmakers in the Virginia Senate not only cant pass a budget, but some members even refuse to present their ideas for discussion and allow the budget process to move forward,” stated Audrey Jackson, AFP-VA State Director. “Instead, they are holding the budget hostage.
With the March 10th deadline approaching, the Virginia Senate has an opportunity to pass a fiscally responsible budget that puts our state back on the path to prosperity. Now is the time to stand out against partisan politics and keep your promise to Virginia and pass a budget, stated Jackson.
The Virginia Constitution requires the Virginia General Assembly to pass a balanced budget. The House of Delegates has produced a balanced budget that addresses Virginias needs without raising taxes.
This is the most important responsibility of the General Assembly and many senators are playing politics rather than keeping their oath to uphold the Virginia Constitution,” Jackson added.
Our legislators were elected to do the hard work of governing, which means prioritizing how they spend limited taxpayer dollars, Jackson concluded. “It is time to stop the political games a craft a budget that funds our public services without increasing the burden on our taxpayers.
