Americans for Prosperity Denounces Proposed Meals Tax in Campbell County
Richmond, VA The Virginia chapter of Americans for Prosperity opposes any tax increase proposed by the Campbell County Board of Supervisors.
Now is not the time to be raising taxes on Campbell County Families. Like the hardworking families of Campbell County have done for the last several years, it is time for Campbell County Supervisors to learn to live within their means, stated Audrey Jackson, Virginia State Director of Americans for Prosperity.
Campbell County officials may consider instituting meals and occupancy taxes as they review an expected multimillion dollar funding gap in 2012-13. Much of that $6 million budget strain comes as the county school division faces a loss of federal stimulus funds, among other budgetary challenges. As we struggle through these difficult economic times, the Campbell County Supervisors think its a good idea to raise taxes on consumers and therefore endanger small businesses which are already struggling to survive, stated Jackson.
When taxes go up, families trying to make their monthly budgets will be less likely to go out for a meal and the local restaurants trying to attract customers will pay the price. Its hard enough to operate a small business without government continually ramping up the costs of simply existing.
Local government may see dollar signs when they think of raising taxes, but in the real world, these increases mean a familys and business bottom line, and in many cases, the viability of jobs in those businesses affected.
