Public Education: More Money or More Choices?

January 25, 2013 J

While education bureaucrats were converging on the State Capitol wanting more money for the government school monopoly, the group Texans Deserve Great Schools was advocating for more choices for parents and students.

Senate Education Chairman Dan Patrick took that opportunity to point out why improving educational options in Texas is so important. Texas is lagging behind other states and nations.

While we need a public education-plus plan which lifts the cap on charter schools, we need reforms which provide individual parents with options to select their child’s school.

Assigning kids to government schools based on the parents’ zip code should not be the American system – certainly not the Texas way.

Next week is National School Choice Week. Providing more options to parents will improve education for all students.
