End No Child Left Behind, Support School Choice in Tennessee
Tennessee has formally applied for a waiver to the federal No Child Left Behind law. We strongly support Tennessees schools being focused on meeting the expectation of local tax payers and families than those of bureaucrats in Washington, D.C.
We believe NCLB should be abolished. Tell Gov. Haslam you support education reform by clicking here.
Students and teachers should absolutely be held to high standards, yet those standards do not come from D.C. We support Gov. Haslam for recognizing that Tennesseans have more of an investment in the success of our children and that NCLB only adds bureaucratic red-tape, loss of local control and unnecessary expense.
According to the Heritage Foundation, since 1965 the federal government has spent three-quarters of a trillion dollars on education programs. Yet, graduation rates have fallen along with test scores. We simply are not seeing a return on this federal investment.

Educational choice giving states, communities and families more options (and better options) is one solution that we could implement immediately. Should Tennessee be released from the federally unfunded mandate that is NCLB, we still have problems in large school districts; particularly Memphis and Nashville, where many schools still struggle to graduate their students and prepare them for college or productive careers.
Even with NCLB no long binding on Tennessee, many students in our state will still struggle to succeed.

That is why we need true state-based education reform along with the NCLB waiver. We support school choice. We support charter schools. And we support vouchers to give students and families the means to attend the best school for them.
We will be pushing for serious education reform next legislative session. And we will be pushing for greater school choice.
