Memphis City Budget Grows by 113%, Yet Some Council members Want a Tax Increase. Stop Them Today!

June 09, 2011

“We need revenue”

Memphis City Councilman Myron Lowery proclaimed that Memphis city government needs more revenue – more taxpayer money. Councilman Lowery wants a tax increase to ensure Memphis City Hall does not have to cut spending.

According to the Memphis Finance Division, the City’s general fund operating budget has grown by a whopping 113%! In 2010 general fund revenues were $559,455,524 in 2011 $634,815,930 was adopted. The City’s budget is growing at rates that make most families blush. Taxpayers simply cannot afford the unsustainable rate of spending of City government.

Memphis residents are paying the highest property tax rate in the state; $7.21 per $100 of assessed home value. By comparison Nashville residents pay a $4.13 rate, Knoxville’s is $2.82 and Chattanooga’s is $5.07.

It is wrong to impose even higher taxes on a community that is already over-taxed. Memphis families and small-businesses cannot afford government spending at these levels – and even higher levels if Councilman Lowery has his way.

Help us stop this abuse of the taxpayer. Stand up to City Hall today.
