Stefano 'Outraged' Over IRS Admission of Extra Scrutiny for Right-Leaning Groups
Stefano: “Had to shut down my small organization because of the IRS.”
Washington Crossing, PA – Jennifer Stefano, state director of Americans for Prosperity – Pennsylvania and a nationally known grassroots/Tea Party organizer, is expressing her outrage over today’s announcement by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that it intentionally targeted the tax documents of conservative political groups.
“I am outraged that our government would knowingly subvert and target the First Amendment rights of citizens solely because they believe in freedom and liberty and have bravely taken action to support and advance those principles,” stated Jennifer Stefano, state director of Americans for Prosperity-PA. “This tremendous violation of the rights of Americans warrants more than an apology. Action must be taken immediately to ensure this never happens again.”
Today the IRS admitted that it singled out roughly 75 groups to receive extra scrutiny based on the use of phrases like “tea party” or “patriot” in tax documents.
“This is the most compelling case for limited government since the passage of Obamacare,” Stefano added. “That our government would target groups and individuals based solely on their political beliefs is reprehensible and antithetical to all the principles upon which our government was founded and supposed to operate.”
Stefano continued, “A few years ago, when I was a pregnant stay-at-home mom, I had to shut down my small grassroots organization because of the IRS. I couldn’t afford a lawyer and the laws and documents were so complex and overwhelming and friends of mine in the Tea Party said the IRS would come after me if I made even the smallest mistake. This is not what America is about. We can do better than this and we welcome Congressional hearings on these outrageous IRS abuses.”
