AFP-PA Urges Governor Corbett to Reject Arkansas Medicaid Scheme
State director says alternative plan would still push people into a “broken, bloated system.”
PHILADELPHIA – Americans for Prosperity – Pennsylvania (AFP-PA), the state’s largest free-market grassroots organization with more than 120,000 members, is urging Governor Corbett to resist the Arkansas Medicaid Scheme. Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe is signing into law today legislation authorizing Arkansas to accept federal Medicaid funds and use them to buy private insurance for the state’s low-income residents.
“I urge Governor Corbett to remain strong in his stance not to accept federal dollars for the expansion of Medicaid in Pennsylvania,” said Jennifer Stefano, state director of Americans for Prosperity-Pennsylvania. “As the adage goes, ‘You can put lipstick on a pig, but it is still a pig.’ Regardless of how good the offer may look, the results of expanding Medicaid will be the same.”
The Arkansas Medicaid Scheme would yield the same results as the traditional expansion plan offered by the Obama Administration. Under both versions of Medicaid expansion, Pennsylvania would still see federal funding rolled back after three (3) years; 800,000 – 1,000,000 new people would still be added to the Medicaid rolls; and Pennsylvania taxpayers would still be left to pick up the tab when the federal funding dries up.
“Expanding Medicaid would do nothing to serve the people it sets out to protect,” continued Stefano. “I hope Governor Corbett will continue to put the working families of this state first and reject the Arkansas Medicaid Scheme that will only trap more of our residents in a broken, bloated system.”
