AFP-PA Applauds House Committee Vote on Prevailing Wage Changes

April 22, 2013

PHILADELPHIA – Americans for Prosperity – Pennsylvania (AFP-PA), the state’s largest free market grassroots organization with more than 120,000 members, is applauding a recent House Committee’s vote to support changes to the prevailing wage laws.

“Many of Pennsylvania’s local governments are struggling to make ends meet and the prevailing wage laws are making this more difficult by driving up the cost of local projects,” said Jennifer Stefano, state director of Americans for Prosperity-Pennsylvania.  “These increased costs must then be passed along to the working families of Pennsylvania whose taxes ultimately pay for all of these projects.”

Pennsylvania’s prevailing wage laws apply to all publicly funded construction projects costing more than $25,000 and generally include wages between 20 percent and 50 percent higher than the average wage in the county.  Two bills easing these requirements were voted out of committee along party-lines by a vote of 15-10.

“The bottom line is these prevailing wage laws result in higher costs and lower efficiency,” continued Stefano.  “I applaud the House Committee’s support of common sense reforms to the antiquated prevailing wage laws and urge all House members to support them when they reach the floor for a vote.”
