RECAP: Luncheon with Tim Phillips
Last Wednesday, March 7, AFP-OK hosted a conservative leaders luncheon with special guest Tim Phillips, President of AFP. The idea was to get as many of the leaders in conservative politics together to share stories, ideas and put faces with names. We wanted a broad cross section of the conservative movement in Oklahoma. Establishment GOP, Tea Party, Independent Conservative and even the Ron Paul campaign in Oklahoma were represented. Most of the people in the room had heard of each other, but not met in person. About 25-30 leaders attended.
There was a thirty minute period to mingle and get to know each other. Afterwards, AFP-OK State Director Stuart Jolly made a few remarks and asked everyone to introduce themselves. He then introduced Phillips.
Phillips spoke for roughly twenty minutes. He talked about how grassroots is a strategy of patience. He said that nothing hinges on a single election. However, slow and relentless work over a decade of elections will start to show momentum. AFP has started to grow the grassroots of conservatism and we are already showing results. He explained how AFP came into being and how explosive the growth as become. He talked about the future of AFP and how the other groups can work with AFP to achieve mutual goals.
There was a brief Q&A session afterwards, but as time was limited, it was cut short.
Everyone who attended appreciated being invited. The overall feeling was that the luncheon was a huge success. One of the attendees said it was a “stroke of genius” to bring everyone together. She also commented that she couldn’t believe that someone hadn’t thought of it before AFP.
