Americans for Prosperity Ohio: Fitzgerald’s Hotel Tax Needs an Early Check Out from Budget

October 10, 2013

COLUMBUS – Americans for Prosperity Ohio today is urging Cuyahoga County Executive Ed Fitzgerald to call off his proposed hotel tax increase.

“Mr. Fitzgerald has a history of wasteful spending and over-taxation,” said Eli Miller, Americans for Prosperity Ohio State Director.  “The businesses and taxpayers in Cuyahoga County are not revenue streams for endless funding requests.  We hope he will withdraw the proposal and put the hotel tax to bed.”

Fitzgerald’s proposal to tax previously untaxed hotel rooms at a 5.5% rate has drawn questions and ire from fellow County Executives and members of the business community.

“Our economy continues to struggle and too many Ohioans are unemployed.  This is not the time to increases taxes or decrease businesses competitive advantage just to pay for increased spending,” continued Miller.  “We look forward to the release of the budget next Tuesday and hope that Mr. Fitzgerald will demonstrate some fiscal responsibility.”
