Americans for Prosperity – North Carolina Stands Behind Big, Bold Tax Reform that gets NC Back in the Game for Jobs
Group says that NC should tax less, tax fair, and tax simple to boost economy and business growth
RALEIGH, NC – In a bold and aggressive move, Americans for Prosperity – North Carolina today announced a $500,000 citizen-led, grassroots effort to reform North Carolina’s tax code, leading North Carolina to tax less, tax fair and tax simple.
Citing the need to cut taxes, spur economic development, and reform North Carolina’s depression-era tax code, AFP-NC is announcing a massive grassroots issue effort that will urge lawmakers to be bold and get North Carolina “Back in the Game” when it comes to tax relief and reform.
“With record high unemployment, it is time for North Carolina to get back in the game of job creation,” said Americans for Prosperity President, Tim Phillips. “With high income tax rates, a crippling franchise tax, and a reckless and random local privilege tax; North Carolina taxes citizens and businesses too much and makes the tax code too confusing. It is time for North Carolina to tax less, tax fair, and tax simple.”
AFP announced that Lt. Governor Dan Forest will be joining the effort to pass broad-based tax reform. “I applaud the Senate leadership for taking on tax reform and support their efforts to create a system that supports job creation, wealth creation, and overall fairness. I look forward to working with Americans for Prosperity in promoting to the public the need for these much needed reforms,” Forest said.
In adopting a new tax code, Americans for Prosperity believes lawmakers should model the following principles:
- An initial large tax cut that spurs economic growth and reassures the public that tax reform is not just a ruse to raise taxes
- A reduction/elimination of personal and corporate income taxes
- Elimination of the death and local privilege taxes
- Simplification and reform of the Franchise Tax
- Elimination of welfare payments in the tax code (EITC)
- A broad based sales tax that treats all sales equally
Phillips announced AFP would make an initial investment of $500,000 in efforts that focus on town hall meetings, mass-marketing and grassroots organizing.
“This is phase one of our plans to encourage the General Assembly to go for the win. But the bigger they go, the bigger we will go. When it comes to improving the prosperity of North Carolinians, losing is not an option. AFP will do whatever it takes to secure victory.”
AFP-NC also announced plans to develop a unique marketing effort that would target national and international business location magazines, as well as publications that cater to retirees, advertising North Carolina’s new system of taxation that taxes less, taxes fair, taxes simple and does not tax death.
“I want to see North Carolina, not only back in the game for jobs, but winning the game. Should North Carolina adopt bold, aggressive tax relief and reform, we are going to help tell that story to the world,” said Dallas Woodhouse, State Director of Americans for Prosperity.
“A plan with these principles ensures that everyone who currently pays taxes will pay less and be able to save and invest more. This plan ensures that unfair loopholes are removed, and that a new, modern tax system will protect critical investments in education. These principles guarantee that everyone pays something, but no one pays more than their fair share. It is a winning game changer in North Carolina.”
