Arlington, Va. – Today Americans for Prosperity, the nation’s largest free-market, grassroots organization, applauds Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for urging House Republicans to stand firm against efforts to eliminate the sequester, the across-the-board spending cuts that are scheduled to go into effect at the end of the year.
“This is a critical time for members of Congress to stand firm behind their promises to the American people to get runaway government spending under control. Sequester is the best tool we have right now to keep government spending in check,” said Americans for Prosperity President Tim Phillips. “The sequester was a hard-fought victory for conservatives in Washington, and they should fight hard to keep it in place in this next round of budget talks.”
As Congress works on legislation providing funds for the federal government for the remainder of FY2014, Americans for Prosperity calls on Congress to pass a continuing resolution at an overall discretionary spending level of $967 billion. This level will maintain the sequester, live up to the agreement that Congress made in the Budget Control Act, and return federal spending to pre-stimulus levels.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) crossed the Capitol today to urge House Republicans to stand firm against efforts to ease across the board spending cuts, at a time when House-Senate negotiations to replace those cuts have stalled.
Many Republicans are nervous about allowing the next round of cuts — known as a sequester — to take effect as scheduled mid January because they hit the Pentagon particularly hard, but Mr. McConnell has argued that it is better to let them stay in effect than to replace the sequester with a budget deal that would allow overall spending to increase or revenues to rise.
