New Hybrid Medicaid Expansion Is Anti-Free Market, Harms Patients

April 04, 2013

Arlington, VA – Today Americans for Prosperity, the nation’s largest advocate for economic freedom, issued a statement opposing Arkansas-style Medicaid expansion. Some state governors are beginning to express interest in this flawed plan.

AFP President Tim Phillips said, “Medicaid is a dead-end system that forces our most vulnerable citizens onto a one-size-fits-all government program, and leaves them with poor healthcare options and little choice. The latest ‘hybrid’ being promoted by HHS Secretary Sebelius is backed up by promises of choice, flexibility, and cost savings – but closer examination shows these claims to be false. Medicaid expansion of any kind is anti-free market and leaves more Americans dependent on the government. Instead, we should be taking on comprehensive, free-market Medicaid reform that can improve the health of patients while controlling costs in the long term.”
