Let the wasteful wind production incentives expire

ARLINGTON, VA—Today Americans for Prosperity (AFP), the nation’s premier free market grassroots organization, re-released a large and growing coalition letter opposing the extension of the federal wind production tax credit.  AFP initially released the letter in September with a 64 federal, state and local organizations opposed to PTC extension. Building on the momentum of the opposition and the increased activity on Capitol Hill from the wind lobby, the size of the coalition swelled to 88 organizations. The coalition continues its call on Congress “to end special tax provisions that distort the energy market and increase energy prices.

“It’s long past time to let the wind production tax credit expire.  It’s been in place for twenty years and the sector is still entirely dependent on the credit and renewable electricity mandates to exist,” said AFP Director of Policy James Valvo.  “The 88 organizations differ in size and scope, but they all have one thing in common: They agree that it’s time to end special tax treatment for wind-energy production.”

The principal federal support for wind energy, the production tax credit, is scheduled to expire at the end of 2012.  In August, the Senate Finance Committee passed a measure that would renew and dramatically expand several targeted tax credits for renewable energy, including wind power, for 2013.  According to the Committee, this one-year extension will provide a $12.1 billion subsidy over ten years.

“Americans deserve an energy policy that is economically viable and an industry that is strong and independent, not one that limps along and relies on the tax code and purchase mandates to stay afloat,” continued Valvo.  “Congress would be wise to finally allow the wind production tax credit to expire. Millions of citizens and dozens of organizations across the country are calling on them to do so.”
