AFP Launches Major New Effort on Begich's Voting Record

August 21, 2014

Owner of Alaska’s oldest hunting lodge says Alaskans “ticked off” Begich is absent on critical policy issues.

Arlington, Va. — Americans for Prosperity is launching a major new multimedia effort today, focused on Senator Mark Begich’s poor record of representing Alaskans on critical Senate votes.

The ad, “Alaskans Show Up for Work,” features Steve Perrins, who runs the family-owned and operated Rainy Pass Lodge outside of Anchorage. “I think Alaskans are a little bit ticked off” over Begich’s frequent absenteeism, Perrins says in the spot. “Alaska is losing ground because we’ve got a politician that isn’t willing to show up and do his job.”

The ad highlights the fact that Senator Begich has missed more votes than 80% of all U.S. Senators last year. Perrins asks, “How can he fight for Alaskans, if he won’t show up for work in Washington, D.C.?”

AFP President Tim Phillips had the following to say:

“When it comes to critical issues facing Alaskans, Mark Begich seems to have more important things to do than fight for them in the United States Senate. Missed votes means the voices of Alaskans are marginalized and unheard. With one of the worst voting records in the Senate, Begich has failed to represent Alaskans on important issues like government spending, energy regulations and agricultural policy. Unfortunately, Mark Begich just hasn’t been showing up for work.”

The ad will run on broadcast and cable television across Alaska for several weeks at a cost of more than $1 million. The organization is asking Alaskans to call Senator Begich’s office and ask him to show up for work and represent their views on vital economic issues.

A few of the important votes Begich has missed:

S. 1845: Extending Unemployment Benefits (Begich: Not Present)
S. 2262: Promote Energy Savings in Residential and Industry Buildings (Begich: Not Present)
S. 1197: National Defense Authorization Act (Begich: Not Present)
S. Amdmt. 998: Rural Broadband Loan Program (Begich: Not Present)
S. 2642: Reform and Funding of Agricultural Programs (Begich: Not Present)
