AFP Foundation and CAGW Release ad on the Threat of National Debt
$2 million ad buy showcases chilling look at the effects of US debt
Arlington, VA – As the debate of ideas rages, Americans for Prosperity Foundation, the sister organization of Americans for Prosperity, and Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) co-released a powerful ad focused on the country’s spending addiction and the dangers of the growing national debt. The ad, called the “Chinese Professor,” began running Sunday, October 21, and continues to air through November 11 on cable networks nationwide with a $2 million ad buy.
This ad features a chilling look at one potential future scenario if the United States continues on its current path. Today the debt stands at $16.1 trillion, $1.15 trillion of which is held by the Chinese government, the largest foreign holder of U.S. debt. Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen has referred to the national debt as the “single-biggest threat to our national security.”
“The prosperity and safety of our nation is in jeopardy,” said AFP Foundation President Tim Phillips. “Americans know that going deeper into debt with countries like China is impairing our nation’s future and it must be changed. With 16 trillion in debt the issue of debt and spending is of paramount importance and must be addressed.”
The transcript of the ad is as follows:
PROFESSOR: [subtitles] Why do great nations fail? The Ancient Greeks…the Roman Empire…the British Empire…and the United States of America.
PROFESSOR: They all make the same mistakes turning their back on the principles that made them great. America tried to spend and tax itself out of a great recession.
PROFESSOR: Enormous so-called “stimulus” spending, massive changes to health care, government takeovers of private industries, and crushing debt. Of course, we owned most of their debt…so now they work for us.
NARRATOR: America can determine our own future but only if we own it. For American independence, we must cut spending and waste.
