Lonegan: Sweeney’s “Misguided Priorities Are a Formula for Disaster”

Senate President “Out of Touch with Reality” on $750M Higher Ed Borrowing Scheme

BOGOTA, NJ – Americans for Prosperity-New Jersey state director Steve Lonegan has issued the following statement in response to Senate President Steve Sweeney’s latest personal attack. As reported today by PolitickerNJ’s State Street Wire, Sweeney accused Lonegan of using “a national tragedy to further his political agenda.”

Lonegan statement:

“In the ten years Steve Sweeney has been entrenched in Trenton, New Jersey has continued to fall deeper and deeper into an economic abyss of higher taxes and more debt,” said Lonegan. “Now, it’s clear the senator is out of touch with reality, out of touch with taxpayers and, worst of all, completely out of touch with those New Jersey residents who have been hardest hit by this storm.”

“Borrowing nearly a billion dollars for unnecessary construction on college campuses when the state is facing a fiscal calamity is the height of recklessness and irresponsibility,” continued Lonegan. “Hurricane Sandy has leveled utter devastation along the shore and other parts of the state that will require billions of taxpayer dollars in order to rebuild the infrastructure alone.”

“Instead of giving college graduates a reason to stay in New Jersey, he’s giving them more reason to leave,” added Lonegan. “Why would they want to live in a state with even more debt and even higher taxes?”

“Senator Sweeney is clearly more interested in supplying his union backers with even more jobs for unnecessary projects at taxpayer expense than doing the right thing and trying to put the state’s fiscal house in order.”

“His misguided priorities are a formula for disaster.”
