Lonegan: Federal health-exchange mandate will hike costs, kill jobs
The following op-ed by AFP state director Steve Lonegan appeared in The Record this past weekend.
Opinion: Federal health-exchange mandate will hike costs, kill jobs
PROPONENTS of establishing health insurance exchanges have ignored economic realities and deny the consequences of their creation.
With the jobless rate in New Jersey hovering at almost 10 percent, allowing the free market to create jobs should be the goal of the day. The health insurance exchanges now being forced on states by the increasingly powerful federal government will destroy existing jobs and curtail new job creation.
The bankruptcy of the iconic Hostess Company is a stark reminder of the impact of higher costs on the marginal profits of businesses competing in the marketplace. The harsh reality is the market, driven by consumers, does not allow costs to simply rise at the command of the president without consequences, and the health insurance exchanges ensure costs to businesses will rise.
