WMUR: Group offers gas for $1.84 per gallon

October 22, 2012

The group Americans for Prosperity offered drivers 15 gallons of gas for just $1.84 per gallon for a limited time on Sunday.

The gas deal was offered to the first 150 vehicles that showed up at Klemm’s Mobile on Elm Street in Manchester.

Americans for Prosperity said the gas price roll back reflects the cost of gas four years ago before President Barack Obama took office. The group said the price cut is meant to demonstrate how much the president’s failed green agenda is costing New Hampshire drivers.

“(The) $1.84 a gallon (was the) exact price (that the American Automobile Association said) was the average price for regular unleaded four years ago when this administration took over,” said Americans for Prosperity New Hampshire director Corey Lewanowski.

However, officials said it may be tough to tie politics to gas prices. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, gas prices peaked at around $4.16 a gallon in July 2008 when President George W. Bus was in office.

A spokesperson for the Obama administration said the focus should be on helping the U.S. control its own prices by becoming less dependent on foreign oil.

“We need to explore more on our own lands develop natural gas and we need to develop alternative energy sources,” said Doug Wilson, of the Obama 2012 Campaign.

For Nashua driver Steve Galuna, it means building an oil pipeline from Canada to Texas.

“We have to open up that keystone pipeline or we (will) pay $9 a gallon,” Galuna said.
