Beer Tax Increase Does Not Belong in New Hampshire

January 16, 2013

WINDHAM – Americans for Prosperity (AFP) New Hampshire is expressing their opposition to a bill aimed at increasing the beer tax in the state.

“Any increase in tax imposed upon a business gets passed along to the consumers. The proposed beer tax increase will be no different,” said Corey R. Lewandowski, State Director of Americans for Prosperity-New Hampshire. “What is especially troubling about this increase is the large number of small businesses from family owned grocery stores to brewery owners who will be impacted and forced to pass along the increase to their consumers.”

HB 168 introduced by Reps. Charles Weed, (D-Keene), and Richard Eaton, (D-Greenville), would increase the tax on beer from 30 to 40 cents per gallon.

“We adamantly oppose the increase of the beer tax and hope the legislature will abandon this bad idea which will only make it more difficult for our small businesses to stay afloat in this economy,” Lewandowski continued.
