Americans for Prosperity Says Time Has Come for Governor Hassan to be an Executive
MANCHESTER – Americans for Prosperity – New Hampshire (AFP-NH) today is calling for Governor Maggie Hassan to assume a leadership role in setting and pursuing state priorities. The latest example of her dodging her executive responsibilities comes in her refusal to establish transportation funding priories as evidenced in today’s Concord Monitor piece.
“Governor Hassan was elected chief executive officer of our state, not re-elected to the legislature. She cannot lead from behind, especially if she expects anyone to follow,” said Greg Moore, State Director of AFP-NH. “The time has come for Governor Hassan to be an executive, which means setting forth her priorities for the state as well as the path for pursuing and accomplishing them on a whole host of issues like transportation funding. Is she advocating for a gas and diesel tax increase, higher tolls or some other funding mechanism, or is she supporting ending the raid on the Highway Fund by other state agencies? We don’t know because she refuses to take any position on these issues. It’s time for leadership out of the corner office.”
AFP-NH, which fought successfully to eliminate a gasoline tax increase from the state budget, notes today’s Eagle Tribune article detailing the soaring price of gasoline.
“If the NH House and Governor Hassan had prevailed, New Hampshire residents would be paying as much as 15 cents more per gallon of gas every time they fill up their tanks,” added Moore. “With gas prices already reaching record levels and more increases predicted, it is the wrong time and would be wrong for New Hampshire for the state to increase the gasoline tax in order to grow state government. We hope Governor Hassan will come forward with some common sense priorities for improving our state that do not include raising taxes on the backs of the hard-working families and businesses here.”
