Americans for Prosperity Says Brookings Study Showing Lack of Economic Dynamism Undermines New Hampshire’s Economy

May 06, 2014

MANCHESTER – Americans for Prosperity – New Hampshire (AFP-NH) today pointed to a study by the Brookings Institution showing that businesses in America are being destroyed faster than they are being created, and that New Hampshire was the 7th worst state for business creation as a reason for a renewed focus on making the state more business friendly.

“This study should come as no surprise to the many potential entrepreneurs who have chosen not to try to start a business here in New Hampshire,” said Greg Moore, AFP-NH State Director.  “It’s time for state policy makers to get back to the idea of finding new ways to make the Granite State a more attractive place to create a new business and to stop putting impediments in the way of would-be employers.  Starting new businesses is an essential part of job creation and New Hampshire has lost its way in this critical area.  We need new leadership to set a clear direction that we are open for business.

In particular, AFP-NH pointed to lowering among the highest business taxes in the nation, passing a Right to Work law, reducing energy costs and increasing health care competition as critical step to making New Hampshire more competitive.

“Having the 3rd highest business taxes, a lack of worker freedom and excessive energy and health care costs makes a huge obstacle to someone who is considering setting up a business here,” added Moore.  “It’s clear that job creation is not the top focus of the state and that has to change.  We need to make the tough decisions to cut our business taxes, pass Right to Work and bring our energy and health care costs in line with the rest of the country.  This needs to be the top priority of leadership and if it isn’t, the public should be asking why.”
