Americans for Prosperity-NH: There is Nothing Fair for New Hampshire in the Marketplace Fairness Act

April 22, 2013

MANCHESTER – Americans for Prosperity is expressing their disappointment in today’s Senate vote to create a new tax by voting to end debate on the Internet sales tax.   The Senate voted 74-20 to end debate on the bill known as the “Marketplace Fairness Act.”

“There is nothing fair to New Hampshire businesses in the Marketplace Fairness Act,” said Greg Moore Americans for Prosperity – New Hampshire State Director.  “We applaud Senators Kelly Ayotte and Ron Wyden for their opposition to this act and for recognizing this bill for what it is – the creation of a new tax.”

The Marketplace Fairness Act legislation would force New Hampshire businesses to collect and remit sales taxes to those states that do impose them on their citizens who purchase goods and services online.  The bill is expected to pass the Senate later this week.

“New Hampshire businesses should not be turned into tax collectors for other states,” added Moore.  “The cost of complying with the Internet sales tax represents an enormous burden on our businesses and takes their time and resources away from where it should be – expanding their businesses and hiring more New Hampshire workers.”
