Americans for Prosperity Lauds Senate for Blocking ObamaCare Medicaid Expansion in State Budget

June 06, 2013

CONCORD – Americans for Prosperity – New Hampshire (AFP-NH) today praised the New Hampshire Senate for removing the expansion of the state’s Medicaid program under the ObamaCare law from the state’s budget.  The Senate defeated a floor amendment that would have added Medicaid expansion into the budget.

“The Medicaid expansion under ObamaCare is a recipe for providing low-quality care for thousands of New Hampshire residents, while driving up the cost of care for private health insurance and adding billions in new costs to the state’s taxpayers,” said Greg Moore, AFP-NH State Director.  “ObamaCare Medicaid expansion is bad public policy, particularly by dumping tens of thousands of residents who now have private health insurance into the Medicaid program, where they would receive substandard care.  The Senate made the right decision and we commend their foresight to protect New Hampshire’s future.”

The Senate budget did include a provision to create a commission to study the issue of Medicaid expansion, within the context of the effect of the program across the entire health care system.

“The Senate’s study commission makes sure that we can watch other states and see how ObamaCare’s Medicaid expansion impacts them, so that New Hampshire doesn’t jump over the cliff before looking at the rocks below,” added Moore.  “We should not make the residents of our state guinea pigs in the social experiment that is ObamaCare.  This commission will give the state the time to evaluate and see how other states are being affected by this law.  The ‘look before you leap’ is the right approach, and we are glad the Senate took this stand.”
