Americans for Prosperity Calls out House for Tactics to Limit Debate on 23% Gas and Diesel Tax Hike Legislation

April 07, 2014

CONCORD – Americans for Prosperity – New Hampshire (AFP-NH) today called out efforts by House Leadership to limit debate on a proposed 23% increase in the gas and diesel tax.  Instead of going through the normal legislative process of first going to House Public Works and Highways Committee and then the House Ways and Means Committee, Speaker Terie Norelli has chosen to have an unusual merged committee hear the bill (SB 367) on Tuesday, with the announcement of this only found in the calendar last Friday.

“It’s clear that Speaker Norelli has every intention of ramming this 23% increase in the gas and diesel tax down the throats of New Hampshire taxpayers, even if it means bending rules and limiting the opportunity for the public to weigh in on a critical issue,” said Greg Moore, AFP-NH State Director.  “Moreover, by taking the unusual step of setting up a joint committee and then only letting people know about that through a calendar notice on Friday for a Tuesday hearing, there can be no doubt that this entire process has been rigged to cut off debate so that those who are opposed to the big government plans of this legislation won’t be heard.  This represents a low point in terms of having transparency and open government.”

AFP-NH says it is committed to ensuring that those who support the major tax increase will get a chance to hear about it from their constituents.

“While Speaker Norelli and House leadership may well get their wish and take the opportunity away from those who would speak out against their tax-and-spend agenda tomorrow, there should be no doubt that AFP and other groups will ensure that those who would pass a new assault on the wallets of the state’s working families are held accountable,” added Moore.  “It’s time for our elected officials to listen to their constituents and not avoid them.”
