Americans for Prosperity Calls Out Governor for Taking Credit for Ending Unemployment Tax Hike She Created

July 17, 2013

Americans for Prosperity – New Hampshire (AFP-NH) today called out Governor Maggie Hassan for taking credit for ending a tax hike that she created as Senate Majority Leader.  In 2009, Hassan sponsored SB 129, legislation that included numerous tax increases for the Unemployment Insurance (UI) program in New Hampshire.  The law passed on partisan votes in both the House and Senate.

“At the time of then-Senator Hassan’s massive tax increase on employers, there were calls for reforming the unemployment insurance system, not simply hiking the taxes,” said Greg Moore, AFP-NH State Director.  “However, Hassan rammed through a huge new job-killing payroll tax increase at a time when unemployment was already high.  Now, Governor Hassan is taking credit for the fact that some of her tax increases are being scaled back.  This is truly political grandstanding at its worst.”

AFP-NH also noted that Hassan, in her budget proposal, voted to eliminate tax relief for New Hampshire employers.  The Senate kept those reductions in place, and they became law on the 1st of this month.

“If Governor Hassan were truly interested in reducing the burden on New Hampshire employers and working to ensure that they get back to creating jobs, she would never have fought the common sense tax relief proposals that she stripped from the law in her budget,” Moore added.  “Under Hassan’s watch as a member of Senate leadership, New Hampshire fell to dead last in terms of having the highest business tax rate in the nation.  We’re certainly glad to see the unemployment tax go down, but many of our unemployed friends and neighbors have paid a significant price from Governor Hassan’s commitment to raising taxes on business.”
