Americans for Prosperity Calls our State Medicaid Waiver Application as ‘Cash Grab’ for Federal Taxpayer Money to Grow State Government
CONCORD – Americans for Prosperity – New Hampshire (AFP-NH) today called out the proposed Medicaid waiver by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) simply an attempt to grow state government by asking federal taxpayers to subsidize programs. DHHS will present the proposed waiver at a meeting of the Fiscal Committee at 1 PM this afternoon.
“Those who do not learn the lessons of history as doomed to repeat them, and the proposed Medicaid waiver sets up New Hampshire’s state budget for a fall similar to the Medicaid Enhancement Tax,” said Greg Moore, AFP-NH State Director. “When you try to scam the federal taxpayers to pay for growing state government, eventually it will be time to pay the piper. It’s disappointing that Governor Hassan’s administration hasn’t learned this lesson and is setting the state up for a future financial crisis.”
Moore, a former Director at DHHS, said that the requirement in state law to seek an 1115 federal Medicaid waiver was an chance for state officials to reform the state’s Medicaid program, currently the largest program in the state budget, which is rapidly growing.
“The state had an opportunity with this waiver to overhaul a dysfunctional Medicaid program that is growing out of control and will lead to cuts to education, public safety and other critical areas if left unchecked,” added Moore. “Instead, Governor Hassan is simply using it as a cash grab to con federal taxpayers into sending more of their hard-earned money here to grow a broken Medicaid program. This is a wasted opening to deliver real reform that could have protected other important services for years to come.”
