Testimony of Tom Thomson on HB 617
TESTIMONY OF TOM THOMSON
HONORARY CHAIRMAN OF AMERICANS FOR PROSPERITY
BEFORE THE HOUSE WAYS AND MEANS COMMITTEE
MARCH 14, 2013
Madam Chairwoman, members of the Committee; my name is Tom Thomson and I serve as the Honorary Chairman of Americans for Prosperity in New Hampshire. In that capacity, I am representing all hard working New Hampshire citizens who will be impacted by this 83% increase in gas and diesel taxes.
This proposed increase in the state tax on gasoline and diesel is an attempt to grow the size of government. What people seem to have forgotten is that growing the size of government means shrinking the paychecks and take home pay of New Hampshire families and business owners.
While the increase in the already record high price of gasoline is painful enough, no one is talking about the even higher prices for diesel fuel (50 cents more per gallon) which will hit consumers multiple times. Stop and think about it. Everything we consume moves by diesel, as many as three to five times before it reaches consumers. Thus, making the price of everything including food higher due to any increase in the diesel tax. So the prospect facing New Hampshire families is not only will it cost them more to fill up their tank to drive to the store, but when they get there, everything they need to purchase will be more expensive as well. All in the name of more state spending.
I strongly oppose HB 617 which includes the gasoline and diesel tax increase. I hope that you will consider both our New Hampshire families and our businesses when you vote on this 83% increase on gas and diesel.
“The Power to Tax is the Power to Destroy,” by passing this bill we at best will cripple our New Hampshire Advantage and worse, many will lose their jobs and or businesses.
