Americans for Prosperity Says ObamaCare Medicaid Expansion Still Bad for New Hampshire, Even With Deck Stacked in Study Commission

July 08, 2013

CONCORD – Americans for Prosperity – New Hampshire (AFP-NH) today said that while the first meeting of the ObamaCare Medicaid expansion study commission demonstrated that the majority of the group is made up of ObamaCare supporters, expanding the largest program in state government remains a bad idea.  The commission, authorized in the state budget, is set to report on the expansion of Medicaid by October 15, and gave supporters of expansion a 5-4 majority by statute.

“While today’s first meeting already made clear that the supporters of the ObamaCare Medicaid expansion have the votes to deliver a report that calls for expanding the program, that does nothing to change the reality that it would be a remarkably unwise decision for New Hampshire,” said Greg Moore, AFP-NH State Director.  “ObamaCare Medicaid expansion means higher taxes, higher insurance premiums and worse health care for the tens of thousands of people who would lose their private health insurance in favor of Medicaid.  There is little upside for this program for our citizens, other than to cater to the ideology of those who are bent on ramming through the terribly flawed ObamaCare law that is falling apart every day.”

AFP-NH pointed to the decision last week by the Obama administration not to implement the employer mandate until at least 2015 as another reason for New Hampshire not to expand Medicaid in the near future.

“Businesses respond to incentives and by not enforcing the employer mandate and with an expanded Medicaid program, the Obama administration is sending a clear message for large employers with lower-paid workers to dump their employees onto Medicaid,” added Moore.  “This means that many more individuals would lose their high-quality private insurance and instead get substandard Medicaid, which means worse health outcomes for those who are affected.  It’s just one more reason that ObamaCare Medicaid expansion is wrong for New Hampshire.”
