MANCHESTER – Americans for Prosperity – New Hampshire (AFP-NH), following today’s House vote to increase the state gas tax 67% by passing HB 617, made clear that the group will take the fight to stop the tax hike to the Senate. The increase, at roughly $95 million when fully implemented, represents the largest tax increase in state history.
“Sadly for the working families and businesses of New Hampshire the House voted today to make it more difficult for them to make ends meet and fill up their tanks by putting their own need for higher taxes ahead of the needs of our residents to pay for basic needs,” said Greg Moore, AFP-NH State Director. “Approving the largest tax increase in state history shows a short-sided and desperate attempt on the part of the House to grow government regardless of the cost to our citizens.”
The bill now moves to the Senate where Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Morse has indicated his opposition to the increase, projecting the bill will be “dead upon arrival.”
“Senator Morse and other members of the Senate are now all that stands between New Hampshire residents and the largest tax increase in state history, adding $2.50 to the cost of filling your gas tank and a huge hit to those who buy diesel for their trucks and equipment,” added Moore. “We look forward to working with them to stop this burden from being placed upon our families and business owners.”
