Shocker: Illegal Higher Taxes
|Higher property and sales taxes – that’s the gift the Nevada Legislature is giving to hard-working, tax-paying residents of Washoe County.
How do you say, “Thank you, I’ll have another” and “you’re welcome?”
The Legislature is debating a bill that skirts the Nevada Constitution’s 2/3rds tax requirement – a requirement designed to PROTECT Nevada taxpayers against the overreaches of power-hungry legislators’ intent on funneling taxpayer dollars into wasteful public spending.
The Nevada Legislature has amended Assembly Bill 46 as to not require a 2/3rds vote. Instead, the Legislature wrongly believes it can give the Washoe County Commission the authority to raise taxes.
In Nevada, tax increases require a 2/3 majority vote in the Nevada Legislature to pass – a rule that safeguards taxpayer dollars. With the current language of Assembly Bill 46, all that is needed for a tax increase to pass is a simple majority.
Americans for Prosperity-Nevada brought light to a similar consideration earlier this month with this post. We believe in the process, with rules designed to protect Nevada taxpayers. In this instance, there is no direct vote of the people or the required 2/3rd vote by the Legislature. Even the Nevada Constitution reads:
“Except as otherwise provided in subsection 3, an affirmative vote of not fewer than two-thirds of the members elected to each House is necessary to pass a bill or joint resolution which creates, generates, or increases any public revenue in any form, including but not limited to taxes, fees, assessments and rates, or changes in the computation bases for taxes, fees, assessments and rates.”
This bill has passed the Assembly, and now goes to a vote in the Senate where, unfortunately, it is expected to pass.
What stands between higher property and sales taxes in Washoe County is Governor Sandoval who has repeatedly promised not to support higher taxes.
WE URGE YOU TO CALL GOVERNOR SANDOVAL TODAY AND TELL HIM TO RESPECT THE CONSTITUTION AND VETO THIS UNCONSTITUTIONAL MEASURE: (775) 684-5670
