Pass The Buck
Nevada politicians acting irresponsibly? No surprise there. What is astonishing, however, is how they have abdicated their responsibility to their constituents to abide by the Nevada Constitution.
As you may remember, AFP-Nevada was extremely vocal in our disapproval of Assembly Bill 46. The bill skirted the Nevada Constitution’s requirement to have a 2/3 majority of the legislature to raise taxes. By passing Assembly Bill 46, the Nevada Legislature “passed the buck,” essentially allowing/enabling Washoe County Commissioners to raise property and sales taxes on residents – which we argue may violate the Nevada Constitution.
Former GOP national committeewoman Heidi Smith stated, “All Carson City (the Legislature) did was pass the buck because whoever votes ‘yes’ on this [tax hike] is going to kill their political career.”
Raising taxes is just another way for politicians to evade tough choices, like cutting wasteful spending and reforming government to be more efficient.
Within the next few weeks, Washoe County Commissioners will bear the burden of the Nevada Legislature’s irresponsible tactics and hear some of the tax provisions of Assembly Bill 46.
