Several weeks ago President Obama asserted that ‘We don’t have a spending problem’ And in Monday’s press conference Pres. Obama’s reasserted his refusal to negotiate spending cuts in connection with the looming debt ceiling debate. Obama accused spending cut proponents of wanting to “collect a ransom in exchange for not crashing the economy”. Obama even went so far as to imply that Republicans wanted to negotiate “with a gun at the head of the American people”.
Pres Obama has come a long way since 2006 when as a US Senator he vehemently opposed raising the debt ceiling. In his own words–
“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.”
Apparently, President Obama was against raising the debt ceiling before he was for it. Just another in a long line of Obama flip-flops (on everything from closing Guantanamo to tax hikes to immigration reform). But I think everyone can agree with his final statement– America does deserve better.
