Last Chance to Rein in Government Spending: Missouri Needs HJR17
“The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining.” John F. Kennedy
As MO returns to budget surpluses after several years of high unemployment and stagnant economic growth, our elected leaders may be tempted to return to the days of spending those budget surpluses.
Overspending and unbalanced budgets may be the way Washington conducts business, but here in MO we are required to balance our budgets. The silver lining of the economic downturn forced states like Missouri to rein in spending, evaluate programs that are not working and even cut spending at times. But revenues are projected to increase this year and next and the temptation to spend those dollars may be too great for some of our elected leaders.
The solution is HJR 17. HJR17 would allow citizens to vote on a constitutional amendment that would cap future spending at 1.5% of the previous year’s revenue in our state.
HJR17 is the perfect legislation to rein in future government spending. HJR17 was voted the “BEST” bill this legislative session during our Missouri Madness project.
With just one week left in the MO legislative session time is running out to debate and pass HJR17. If you support additional retractions to rein in government spending, call John Diehl at 573-751-1544 and Speaker Jones at 573-751-0562 to let them know you would like them to debate HRJ17
