AFP Responds to CBS Distortions
CBS claims our statement, “Obama’s health care law is actually one of the largest tax increases in history”, is misleading, stating that it is less than other historic tax hikes. What tax hikes is CBS talking about? We don’t know because they don’t cite any.
CBS admits the “tax increase for entire ACA is big” and “totals $675 billion spread out over 10 years.” That would make it one of the largest tax increases in American history. But, CBS claims it is smaller than tax hikes in the past such as Bill Clinton’s.
So, let’s look at other major tax hikes in American history.
Bill Clinton signed the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1993, totaling $24.3 Billion in taxes. Yet, that’s a drop in the bucket compared to President Obama’s health care law. What about during the great depression? FDR passed the Revenue Act of 1942, totaling $10 Billion in taxes in the first year, but that’s less than one percent of President Obama’s health care law.
FactCheck.org is cited as stating this health care law ranks 7th in the highest taxes recently and despite the fact that FactCheck.org compares the tax increase to the size of the economy (which is legitimate), – it still ties tied for fifth largest since 1968 – still historically large. No matter what way you slice it, taking an additional .5% of GDP is still a big tax hike and still a big drag on the economy.
Let’s take a look at another CBS distortion. CBS claims AFP’s ad stating, “Shouldn’t Obama’s priorities have been creating jobs and ending reckless spending? Instead, he focused on a $2 trillion health care takeover, which we have to pay for. How can we afford this tax? We’re already struggling,” is false.
False? Thousands of pages of directives with all central control and decision making power given to the federal government, instead of to patients and doctors, is undoubtedly a takeover.
CBS also claims that the $2 trillion taxes on families across America is a distortion since only a percentage of the population will be taxed and penalized for not buying health care insurance. This is known as the individual mandate tax.
What CBS fails to take into consideration is the 20 OTHER taxes included in President Obama’s health care law. Just some of those taxes include the employer mandate tax, the medical device tax, Medicare payroll tax, the investment income surtax, the health insurers’ tax, the excise tax on comprehensive health insurance plans, the tax on drug innovator companies, the high medical bills tax, and the medicine cabinet tax. Click here to read a full list of the taxes President Obama has imposed on hardworking American families.
By combining the mandate tax with the nearly 20 other tax increases, this monstrosity of a law will increase taxes by $500 billion over the next ten years, hurting hard-working Americans. There is no doubt about it; this is now one of the largest tax increases in American history.
