Words with Friends, Obamacare vs. State Exchanges

July 05, 2012

Politicians at every level, and from both parties, are very good at parsing their words just enough to make you feel comfortable with the decision they are about to make on your behalf.

For example, if you were to LOOK UP YOUR STATE REPRESENTATIVE and call their office to see if they support the Michigan Health Care Exchange, you may hear them say that they absolutely do not support that federal law (Obamacare) and want it repealed.  What you might not hear is their stance on the state vs. federally controlled health care exchange.  Or you might hear that they are opposed to the law, but since it is the law of the land we have no choice.  Not only are they misguided on the implications, but they also avoided answering your specific question.

See this video entitled, “States Should Flatly Reject ObamaCare Exchanges.”

The Michigan Senate has already voted to setup state health care exchanges, and Governor Snyder is pushing to implement them in order to get more federal tax dollars.  Implementing a state health care exchange, versus a federally created one, does not give states the flexibility these state representatives and senators tout.  Bad policy is bad policy, even if the Supreme Court determines a mandate is a penalty is a tax.
