Medicaid expansion update

July 17, 2013 J,

In a short, minutes-long meeting today, the Senate Government Operations Committee provided a non-update, update regarding the proceedings of the Medicaid workgroup headed by State Senator Roger Kahn (R-Saginaw Township).

Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville said he thinks a Medicaid bill substitute may be ready for distribution by the middle fo next week. The Senate Government Operations Committee will then begin taking public testimony on the proposal at its July 31st meeting.

In terms of what the proposal may look like…in a letter to Sen. Richardville, Sen. Kahn says his workgroup has identified several reforms that would not require a waiver from the federal government. Sen. Kahn did not provide any specifics regarding the “reforms” the Senate will pursue; however, he claims they will foster independence and increase personal responsibility.

Unfortunately for taxpayers, the workgroup meetings have been held behind closed doors. This means there is little way of knowing whether the reforms pursued by the Michigan Senate are consistent with limited-government principles.

Nonetheless, we should thank our Senators for studying the issue in-depth, rather than rushing into Medicaid expansion in order to meet the artificial deadlines established by politicians in Washington, DC.
