Key Vote Alert: Oppose Medicaid Expansion, HB 4714

Dear Senator:

On behalf of the more than 87,000 Americans for Prosperity-Michigan activists, I strongly urge you to oppose House Bill 4714, which would expand Medicaid under President Obama’s health care law.

As a legislative body, the Senate is supposed to help bring a more thoughtful, deliberative approach to policymaking. We appreciate the time the Senate has taken to study this issue in-depth; however, we’d like to stress that even after such deliberation, there is no obligation for the Senate to take up HB 4714. In fact, our Founders intended for the thoughtful approach of the Senate to help stop ill-conceived policy from becoming law.

Senator Bruce Caswell and Senator Patrick Colbeck have offered two separate alternatives to the Obama-Administration approved HB 4714. These deserve your careful consideration. It is offensive for anyone to suggest that these proposals somehow deserve less consideration because they have not been vetted through the office of federal Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.

Please stand strong for taxpayers. Vote NO on HB 4714. Americans for Prosperity-Michigan will include this vote on our legislative scorecard and educate our activists on how their lawmakers voted on this issue.

Despite how this legislation may be portrayed, please do not forget that this expansion will be implemented at the sole discretion and power of the federal Department of Health and Human Services. Additionally, so-called sunset clauses are an unrealistic figment of the political imagination that unfortunately do not represent the truth taxpayers will ultimately face.

Please feel free to contact us at any time to discuss this issue further, (517) 853-9073.
