Americans for Prosperity-Michigan Applauds Senate for its “Critical Eye” Toward Expanding Medicaid

July 17, 2013

LANSING, Mich.—On the heels of a Medicaid expansion workgroup update, the grassroots group Americans for Prosperity-Michigan thanked Senate lawmakers for taking the time to study the issue in-depth. Scott Hagerstrom, state director of Americans for Prosperity-Michigan, issued the following statement:

“Expanding Medicaid will have a huge impact—that’s a point on which I think we can all agree. For this reason alone, our State Senate ought to take all the time they need to study this issue in-depth. We appreciate those lawmakers who have rolled up their sleeves and are working to determine the right course of action for our state.

“We look forward to numerous public hearings on the issue of Medicaid expansion, especially since the Medicaid workgroup has been meeting behind closed doors. Citizens, not just lobbyists, are eager to weigh in on this issue.

“Our state lawmakers should not rush into expanding Medicaid just to meet artificial deadlines established by the politicians in Washington. Rather, they should analyze all of the information and data, assess alternate proposals, and do what is in the best interests of the taxpayers of Michigan.

“Proponents argue that government has to spend more of our money to save money. That argument doesn’t even pass the smell test. We certainly hope our Senators see through the rhetoric, stand on principle, and reject Washington’s Medicaid expansion.”

Americans for Prosperity-Michigan is a statewide organization of more than 87,000 activists committed to strengthening our constitutional government, establishing fiscal restraint, and giving taxpayers greater control over government. We are dedicated to recruiting, training, educating and motivating grassroots activists to be effective in their own communities. Americans for Prosperity does not support or oppose candidates for public office.
