O’Malley’s Priority For Roads?
Despite $1.5 billion in new state spending, TTF still drained.
According to the Department of Legislative Services, Governor O’Malley has proposed increasing Maryland’s budget by $1.5 billion dollars (FY 2013 $35.8 billion – FY 2014 $37.3 billion). Despite a record spending proposal, questions still loom about transportation funding and Transportation Trust Fund abuse.
“Where are O’Malley’s priorities for roads and bridges?” said Americans for Prosperity Maryland’s Grassroots Director Nick Loffer. “With state spending at record levels, Gov. O’Malley should abandon the gas tax hike and replenish the Transportation Trust Fund – a fund he’s habitually raided in the past to pay for pet projects.”
Americans for Prosperity Maryland has fought and defeated gas tax hike proposals in the previous two legislative sessions. According to the non-partisan Tax Foundation, the gas tax is inherently regressive and disproportionately hurts working families and small businesses. Recently Mark Zandi, chief economist for Moody’s Analytics, advised the Senate Budget Committee not to raise the gas tax.
