Americans for Prosperity Maryland Condemns O’Malley’s 80% Gas Tax Hike
Senate Passes 5th Highest Gas Tax Rate in Nation, Pain for Middle Class
ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Governor O’Malley’s proposal to increase the Maryland gas tax by over 80% was approved by the Maryland Senate. Maryland’s gas tax rate will become the 5th highest in the Nation and will tie the gas tax to inflation using the Consumer Price Index. This provision will unfairly cause the gas tax to automatically go up without a vote by the Legislature.
“Approving an unaffordable 80% gas tax hike, that will also increase the cost of food, clothing, and services, punishes middle class families,” said Americans for Prosperity Maryland’s Grassroots Director Nick Loffer. “Sending revenue, jobs, and Maryland citizens out of state with the 5th highest gas tax rate in the nation will lead to more pain in this difficult economy. This bill doesn’t make sense for Maryland.”
